Evidence against Brazilian president filed with ICC

According to submissions lodged with the international criminal court by AllRise, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro is single-handedly causing about one per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging the Amazon rainforest to burn.

Rupert Stuart-Smith, who helped prepare the climate evidence against Bolsonaro, says that estimate was based on a study projecting heat-related deaths at 2.4C of warming.

If countries meet the Paris Agreement’s goal of staying within a temperature rise of 1.5C, many fewer people would die. But the plaintiffs argue that Bolsonaro is putting this goal at risk.

“If we're going to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, pretty much every scenario that gets us there requires deforestation-based emissions to be cut the first and the fastest,” Stuart-Smith says.
